Nel romanzo originale, Norman Bates è basso, brutto e più vecchio; Hitchcock lo volle giovane e attraente come Anthony Perkins che, durante le riprese, chiamava “Master Bates”. Il cachet dell’attore fu di 40.000 $ che è, esattamente, la cifra rubata da Marion Crane (Janet Leigh).
